Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are there any school trips for students in Year 7
Yes, although with the current issues with Coronavirus it is unlikely that the SAF schools will hold any trips in the next year. When we plan trips and events these are always communicated to parents by email.
2. Are they allowed to wear shorts in the summer (boys)?
Shorts are not part of the school uniform policy for boys or girls. If the weather gets unbearably hot in the summer the school will decide if students can wear their PE kit instead of uniform.
3. How much homework do Year 7 students get?
Core subjects (English, Maths and Science) would be set homework once a week and other subjects in line with the topics they are learning. .(30-60mins)
All students are given a School Planner / Diary on the first day of term, students are expected to write down their homework or reminders to help keep them organised. They will stick their daily timetable into the front of their planner. Parents and form tutors are expected to both sign the planner on a weekly basis.
There are also pages in the planner to record log in information and password reminders, we would suggest that students also write these down at home and keep them in a safe place.
4. What are the school dinners like?
A hard question as it depends what you like. There are lots of options including hot meals, jacket potatoes, a pasta bar, a salad bar, baguettes, wraps and sandwiches. There are lots of pudding choices too. Please have a look at the Chartwells page on the website for more information and examples of their menu.
5. What are the lessons and timings for the day?
Students are expected to arrive at school for 8:35am. The School bell rings at 8:40am and we finish the day at 3:30pm. Please see the School Day page for the timetable of the school day.
6. What happens if a student misses their bus? You will have to go home/call your parents and ask them to take you into school.
At the end of the day we have staff on bus duty who will check that students have got on the bus before they depart from Lincroft.
7. How do I know which bus to get at the end of the day?
The school car park is a very busy place, however there are always staff outside to help you if you are unsure. The buses display their route number in the front window so you know which bus to get on to take you home.
8. Are students allowed mobile phones at school?
You can bring a mobile phone into school but as soon as you are on the school site it must be turned off and put away. If you are seen with it out it will be confiscated for a period of time. All new students will have received the Mobile Phone Policy in the ir new starter pack and both parents and students should have signed and returned it to the school. The school does not accept any responsibility for lost phones.
9. Is there a tuck shop?
There are snacks you can buy at break time from Chartwells.
10. What will we do on our first day in Year 7?
On the first proper day of school you will spend time with your class and tutor to begin with and then move to lessons. You will be taken to your lessons for at least the first week so that you know where to go.
11. Are there detentions?
Yes, hopefully you won’t need to worry about that. Detentions of varying lengths can be given out by teachers and staff for late arrival to school, poor behaviour or lack of work/homework. This is only done if you have been given other chances beforehand and still not done what is expected. This in line with our Behaviour Policy.
12. What stationary/equipment do we need ?
This is under the Uniform & Equipment page. Mainly the equipment you already use in Year 6, plus a scientific calculator and highlighters.
13. Can Year 7 students wear earrings, nail vanish and does hair have to be tied up?
You can wear plain stud earrings, no nail varnish and you must tie your hair up. Please see the uniform and equipment page for the uniform policy and a full list of expectations with regards to hair, jewellery, make up and nail varnish.
14. Are Year 7 students allocated a locker?
There is no expectation that Year 7 will have lockers, we are in the process of reducing the number of lockers we currently have at Lincroft to allow extra space in the corridors. As per the uniform policy students should have a strong rucksack to carry their belongings throughout the day.
Please label your uniform and everything you bring in to school. At secondary school it is your responsibility to be organised and look after your belongings. During the school day it is quite possible that you will spend time in 7 different classrooms around the school as well as the playground, lunch hall and changing rooms. If you lose something, retrace your steps, speak to your form tutor and class teacher and check with the Admin Hub if it has been handed in.
